Fuel transfer from stricken tanker resumed
VLADIVOSTOK, February 23 (Itar-Tass) — A cyclone-caused storm has moved away from the Kuril island of Iturup, making it possible to resume on Thursday the transfer of fuel from the tanker Karakumneft that was cast ashore in Kitovaya (whale) Bay of the Kuril Gulf on Feb 15. Alexander Ivelskoy, head of the press service of the Russian Ministry for Emergencies (RME) center for Sakhalin Region, said, "As of now, one hose line is in operation. No spill of petroleum products is observed. Preparations are under way to use a second hose line". The petroleum products remaining in the tanks of the stricken tanker are pumped into tanker trucks which bring the fuel to shore-based storage facilities.
